The City of Lamego

City and county seat of the district of Viseu, is situated on the left bank of the Balsemão River in northeastern foothills of the Montemuro mountains, 12 km south of the Douro river. Very remote village of origin was an important nucleus and became seat of the bishopric suevo (sixth century) and Visigothic period. Fernando Magno was reconquered from the Moors, definitively, in 1057. In the thirteenth century, Lamego was an important administrative and economic center, in part related to the setting of a significant nucleus of Jews who were dedicated to metal working trade and even medicine. The municipality of Lamego of very steep topography between Montemuro mountains and the Douro is primarily agricultural. Produces famous wines, fruit, cereals and meats, including pigs, which makes the tasty ham.

The city of Lamego , located in the Douro wine producing area , experienced a period of prosperity (eighteenth to mid -nineteenth century) connected to the heyday of Port wine. After the phylloxera and changing channels of commerce, the city lost part of the function of warehousing, living quite the floating population who go to secondary schools and by providing service in important military unit.

Have brandy distilleries and important wine cellars , which even produce a sparkling wine much appreciated. From the monumental view of the city is very rich. The Cathedral is a very old building that has been subjected to immense and profound changes over time . Of medieval times remain the Castle - the set of walls, a square tower keep and tank - and the church of Almacave Romanesque temple already outside the walls. The late sixteenth century, the early seventeenth, though with inward ornaments later Baroque carving, are the churches of Santa Cruz and the Exile. The Baroque period is in fact the most well represented both in civil architecture - many palaces - as in religious. Deserve, however , highlight the Bishop's Palace, now a museum, and the Sanctuary of Senhora dos Remédios , located on a hill bordering the hill of the castle, with a monumental staircase and the church already rocaille ,because the building started in the mid-eighteenth century, lasted until the twentieth.
